Theme: “Can We Keep 1.5°C Alive?”
Date: May 4, 2023
On May 4, 2023, SilverLining’s Global Young Leaders Initiative (GYLI) hosted its annual youth summit, “Can We Keep 1.5°C Alive?”—a global forum designed to amplify youth voices in climate intervention and policy. The event convened young leaders, climate scientists, policymakers, and international experts for a day of candid dialogue on the future of climate action and equitable research access.
One of the featured speakers, Jyoti Singh (India), Postdoctoral Researcher at Rutgers University, reflected on her journey into climate intervention research, which began in 2016 during her PhD studies in India. Singh shared a sobering reality: despite growing global concern about the climate crisis, institutional research on climate intervention in India has seen little to no growth since then.
She cited limited funding and lack of international exposure as major barriers preventing the development of this field in the region. Singh emphasized the urgent need to expand both financial resources and global collaboration opportunities, especially for young scientists based in the Global South.
Her contribution echoed a recurring theme throughout the summit: that addressing the climate crisis demands not only scientific innovation but also equity in research access, institutional support, and visibility for emerging scholars around the world.
