SilverLining’s Global Young Leaders Initiative (GYLI) hosted its annual youth summit on May 4, 2023, under the pressing theme “Can We Keep 1.5°C Alive?” The event brought together young climate advocates, policymakers, scientists, and global experts to discuss the future of climate intervention, governance, and the role of youth in shaping a more sustainable planet.

Among the keynote speakers was Sarah Doherty (USA), Senior Research Scientist and Marine Cloud Brightening (MCB) Project Manager at the University of Washington. In her address, Doherty emphasized the growing inevitability of countries considering climate intervention techniques such as MCB as climate impacts intensify. She stressed the urgent need for comprehensive, transparent research to inform decision-making.

“If these technologies are going to be considered,” she noted, “it’s better they’re considered with good information rather than in the dark.”

Doherty highlighted that in the case of marine cloud brightening, understanding its true potential—and its limitations—is essential. Without thorough research, we risk not knowing whether the technology is viable for cooling the climate, or whether it might cause unintended and harmful consequences in specific regions. She urged for proactive investigation to ensure global leaders are equipped with the best available science when navigating such complex decisions.

The summit reinforced the importance of science-led, youth-centered dialogue in the global climate conversation, especially as speculative interventions move closer to the realm of policy consideration.
